Male Breast Inflammation
15 year old male with swelling (perhaps a lump) under left nipple.?
So yesterday I noticed I had what seemed to be a lump under my left nipple. At first I thought it was breast cancer, but it is relatively painful and from my understanding breast cancer lumps aren’t painful. Also breast cancer includes inversion or outversion of the nipples, and discharge as well. But my nipples have ALWAYS (my entire life) been inverted, and have always given off a slight, flakey discharge (think of dandruff flakes). Are these symptoms relevant now because there is a slight lump?
Also, after comparing the lump to my right side, it feels like the right side has the same feeling, but its not as large and it doesn’t hurt. So could that mean that a normal part of my breast is just having inflammation and swelling?
Most breast lumps in men are a condition called gynaecomastia, a button-like growth under the nipple and areola area that can be felt and is sometimes visible to the naked eye; it can be quite tender.
This increase in the amount of breast tissue isn’t a tumour and occurs due to changes in hormone balances at times like adolescence – your age in other words.
It’s normal and it’s temporary, and is almost certainly what you’ve got.
As a 15 year old male, your chances of breast cancer are as close to zero as makes no difference.
Men get breast cancer, but fewer than 1% of those diagnosed with breast cancer are male. Almost all men diagnosed with it are over 60.
80% of all people diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. It’s rare in women under 40, fewer than 0.1% of women diagnosed are under 30, and it’s almost unheard of in women under 25, let alone teenage girls.
So you can see how unlikely it would be for a teenage male to have breast cancer
If you’re concerned, mention it to your doctor next time you see her/him.
