Advisability of Thyroid Surgery, 7 Years After Bypass Surgery and Valve Replacement?
I had mastectomy followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy in 2001 for male breast cancer. Two yers later, i.e. in 2003, i had double vessel block and also valve damage, for which i underwent bypass surgery and also aotic valve replacement and mitral valve repair. I am on medications for cardiac disease. Now in 2010, there is an accidental finding of thyroid nodule of 1cm * 1.3 cm, and the usguided FNAC did not help to get a correect finding. So, Doctors suggest thyroid surgery to rule out thyroid cancer, because of my previous cancer history, even though clinically the thyroid nodule could not be found out. Is there no way to rule out thyroid cancer without a surgery, or is there scope to get 2nd opinion on the ultrasound test which only showed the thyroid nodule?

1) you can always ask for a 2nd opinion
2) often times there’s no way to tell if a growth is cancerous or not without a surgical biopsy. Usually, if the intra-operative pathology is positive for cancer, they’ll remove the thyroid. If it’s normal, they just close you up.
You should get a second opinion to know about the feasibility of such surgery, however since you’re probably on anti-coagulation drugs, You should be assessed cardiologically prior to the surgery.
Please refer to your cardiologist for proper evaluation.
Goiter and nodules are most commonly caused by iodine deficiency. From the vast amount of research I have read, my opinion is that breast cancer is another iodine deficiency disorder.
So, rather than doom yourself with the resulting dramatic health issues associated with being thyroidless, perhaps it would be wise to address the underlying cause of both the thyroid nodule and your breast cancer.
By the way, MOST thyroid nodules are NOT cancerous.
Yes there are ways to find out whether or not it’s cancerous without surgery.
